The Town of Parker offers a unique way to celebrate the end of summer. It’s called Barker Days. And it’s held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015, at O’Brien Park, 10795 Victorian Drive, Parker, CO 80138.

During the annual event, dogs and their owners are invited to come to O’Brien Park for canine fun and socialization.

Dogs can take a dip in the O’Brien Park pool, which is has been closed to humans for the season and neutralized to be dog-friendly. They also can chase balls on the baseball field, enter contests, test their skills on an agility course and rub noses with local dog-related service providers.

There’s even a separate play area for small dogs under 25 pounds that prefer to play with friends their own size.

To make sure the event is a success, pet owners must abide by the following guidelines:

  • Dogs must wear a current rabies tag and ID tag at all times.
  • Leashes are required outside of the fenced event area and should be kept handy at all times as the dogs play.
  • Owners are responsible for picking up after their own dogs; disposable bags will be provided.
  • All dogs must be accompanied by an adult 18 years or older. Please, no more than two dogs per adult. Kids are welcome at the event, but may not be solely responsible for any dog and should be closely supervised.
  • Dogs in heat, puppies under four months or who have not had final shots, aggressive dogs and dogs who are sick may not attend.
  • Owners are liable for their pets and are responsible for keeping their dogs within event boundaries.
  • NO human swimming will be allowed.

A word of warning from the Town : If your dog does not socialize well in crowds, this is not the event for him. The owner of any dog displaying mounting behavior must immediately leash and remove the dog from the situation.

Because this end-of-summer day is so popular and has drawn more than 1,000 dogs in past years, the Town of Parker recommends that you pre-register through the Parker Recreation’s online registration system at www.ParkerRec.com.

Those who pre-register will have expedited check-in and receive a “doggie bag” of treats, courtesy of local businesses. They also will be guaranteed admittance. Registration the day of the event will be on a space-available basis.

The cost for Barker Days is $6 per dog for Parker residents, $8 for nonresidents; humans are free.
