Do you have old medications that you don’t want to fall into the hands of the wrong people?  Maybe you’ve been holding on to them because you don’t know how to properly dispose of them, so they sit in your medicine cabinet collecting dust.

Sept. 26, 2015, is the day you can safely dispose of these medications in many locations across the country. And it’s free.

In Parker, Colo., unused, over-the-counter and prescription medications will be accepted from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, 2015, at the Parker Police Department, 18600 Lincoln Meadows Parkway, Parker, CO  80134.

Additional Douglas County locations that will accept prescriptions from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. include the:

  • Castle Rock Police Department, 100 Perry St., Castle Rock, CO 80104
  • Lone Tree Police Department, 9220 Kimmer Drive, Lone Tree, CO 80124
  • Highlands Ranch substation of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, 9250 Zotos Drive, Highlands Ranch, CO

Hosted by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the National Prescription Take-Back program is designed to reduce the chance of people accidentally taking or intentionally misusing medications, which are no longer needed by the people who had the original prescription.

In promoting the program, the DEA and U.S. Food and Drug Administration warn that there are a small number of medicines that may be especially harmful and, in some cases, fatal with just one dose if they are used by someone other than the person for whom the medicine was prescribed.

If you have a Take-Back day in your area, take a quick look in your medicine cabinet and take advantage of this great opportunity to get rid of those unwanted and expired medications.

There are some items that will NOT be accepted as part of the program, including:

  • Needles
  • Mercury (thermometers)
  • Oxygen containers
  • Chemotherapy/radioactive substances
  • Pressurized canisters
  • Illicit drugs
