Partnering with Two Local Elementary Schools to Bring Much Needed Food to Kids.

Community give-back is paramount to everything we do – we live, work and play right here in South Metro Denver and making our communities vibrant and healthy is part of our core!
Our most recent endeavor is with Southeast Christian Outreach (SECOR). SECOR is a local food market outreach program. Through donations and volunteers,  SECOR is able to provide an open market feel for community members who are struggling currently and allows them to “shop” in the market for appropriate items their individual families need. Please read about the realities of suburban poverty provided by SECOR, these items are staggering and eye opening.

Realities of Suburban Poverty

  1. For the first time ever, there are more people living in poverty in the suburbs than the urban centers in the US. https://goo.gl/iEvg1d
  2. Nationally, 51% of employed people are living on less than $30,000 a year. The national poverty level for a family of 4 is right at $25,000.00. http://bit.ly/1kwy6dH
  3. Suburban poverty is the fastest growing segment of poverty in America growing at 10% annually.
  4. Douglas county is in the top 5 most affluent counties in America.
  5. There are currently 45,000 families in Douglas, Elbert, and Arapahoe counties (where SECOR serves) living in poverty.
  6. More than 30,000 children in Douglas and Arapahoe counties are not eating on the weekends due to Suburban Poverty.
  7. It takes a full time job paying $23.00 an hour to live in a 2-bedroom apartment and be self-sustainable. The average pay in the 42 zip codes SECOR serves is $15-$17 an hour, if you can find work.

This is where Osgood Team has stepped in. We have adopted two elementary schools – Tollgate Elementary and 6th Avenue Elementary, both in Aurora, CO where there are 65+ students in need of food over the weekend. Each week the amazing volunteers at SECOR pack shopping bags with a significant amount of food to help these struggling families. The Osgood Team picks the food bags up every Thursday and delivers them to the schools. We also make a monthly donation to keep this fabulous market open. This whole process is seamless and a great way to help kids, their families and the community as a whole.
