If you are a fan of TV barbecue contests, you won’t want to miss the 2014 Smokin’ Brew BBQ in downtown Parker this Labor Day weekend. Johnny Trigg is coming to town to compete!

In case you don’t know, Trigg is the 75-year-old Texan who has been featured four times on the TLC reality TV show, BBQ Pitmasters. He’s also been inducted into the National Barbecue Hall of Fame and was the winner of the Jack Daniels’ World Championship BBQ Invitational in 2000 and 2003 – the only competitor to twice win that high honor.

I hear he’s also a really nice guy who loves to talk about BBQ.  I’m hoping he’ll even share a few of his cooking secrets to those who stop by to see him and his wife, Trish.

His appearance gives me all the more reason to skip the Taste of Colorado in Denver and head instead to Parker Station, 19751 E. Mainstreet, Parker, CO  80138.  Plus, the event is free, although tickets must be purchased for food and beverage. And, the competition is hosted by the CCV Rotary Club of Parker, so it supports local and international charities.

It all begins at 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, 2014, and concludes with an awards ceremony at 5 pm on Sunday, Aug. 31.

Trigg won’t be the only BBQer to watch out for. The competition is expected to be fierce. The Kansas City Barbeque Society’s Team of the Year for 2013 is expected to show up, along with five or six past Rocky Mountain BBQ Association Team of the Year champions.  They’ll all be vying for $8,500 in prize money and a year’s worth of bragging rights.

If that isn’t enough to get you there, maybe the line-up of musicians will. The entertainment will begin on Friday with Syke 96, winner of Arvada’s Jam Out Hunger Battle of the Bands competition, who will play from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., followed by the Indulgers, who will play from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

On Saturday, Parker’s own Blinker Fluid will take to the stage from noon to 3 p.m., followed by nationally-known Catfish Kray Blues Band, who will play from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., and then the Lewis and Floorwax Groove Hawgs will perform from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Sunday’s final day will feature Viretta from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Black Jack Canyon Band from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Like I said, you really don’t want to miss the Smokin’ Brew this year. The CCV Rotary Club of Parker has really pulled out all the stops when it comes to the competitors and entertainers. I hope to see you there!
